ACE ( Army Cadet Exchange ) Korea

Two Army Cadets from Camborne Platoon, K Daniel and B Page together with  Captain C Chapman, were given the once in a lifetime opportunity to attend an international exchange in South Korea representing all of the Army Cadets in the Country, in the last two weeks of July.

They left Redruth Station early in the morning of the 14th July and after 27 hours of travel arrived in Seoul.  There were Twenty three Army Cadets on the International Army Cadet Exchange from Austria; Canada; Holland; America; Germany and Sweden, staying at the Korean Youth Hostel in Seoul.

The hosts in Korea were excellent and made them feel very welcome, providing Male and female interpreters, with very detailed planning and execution of the visit. On most days lunch was provided in one of the local restaurants for which most of the meals consisted of rice!
Cadets Daniel and Page visited many places of interest and noticed that in each location it was very clean and impeccably presented.  They visited; the National Police Heritage Museum; The International World Cup Stadium where it was held in 2002, seeing the inside of the stadium and the changing rooms; the Council Offices of Seoul, being informed that the bus transport system used in the city is colour coded to ensure the public get the best travel arrangements for their needs; An old Palace called Changdeokgung, which had been burnt down on a number of occasions over the years and rebuilt on each occasion; an Observation Post overlooking the Republic of North Korea, confirming the real threat that the population of South Korea live with every day; the Seohae Bridge, which took Five years to construct and is nearly five miles long from start to finish, its highest pillar being the size of three football pitches; and The Memorial Hall for the Incheon Landing Operation which was built to render Honours to all who sacrificed their lives in preserving the democracy and freedom of the Peninsula due to the invasion of the Communist forces in 1950.
They also stayed at two Korean Marines Camps, during which Meal times were very strict,  this demonstrated that discipline was a key element to the training, and the importance of teamwork, because a mistake made was the responsibility of all the team!.
Other activities included Physical training before breakfast; abseiling; watermanship, which was a very physical activity; a five mile marches; basketball games with local children form Seoul; and an opportunity for shopping but was restricted to a large indoor Department Store.
On the middle weekend they all stayed with different Korean families and all were looked after really well. It was observed that there is a real family bond by the Koreans whose generosity and warmth was really noticeable.
In one of the Camps where they stayed for three nights, the accommodation was basic, each had a couple of blankets to use on a raised wooden floor to sleep on and Cold Showers were taken because there was no hot water! On some occasions Western Living was shown when some meals were taken at a “McDonald’s”!
On the last day, other members of the group left before cadets Daniel and Page and Captain Chapman whose flight left at 2355pm, and such was the hospitality of the Korean hosts that they would not let them wait at the airport on their own and stayed until boarding time.

The visit was indeed a very memorable trip, where new friendships have been forged across the world and the Army Cadets K Daniel and B Page were both good examples to represent all of the Army Cadets in the Country.

On their return to Cornwall, they set off the following day to join the Cornwall Army Cadets two week Summer Camp at Gosport, a complete month in uniform!

ACE ( Army Cadet Exchange ) Germany

Two army cadets from Cornwall Cadet Company Serjeant Major C Butcher from the Helston Platoon and Cadet Colour Serjeant J Coe from the Bodmin Platoon together with Adult Instructor M Ambrose also from the Helston Platoon attended an international exchange of Army Cadets in Germany representing all of the Army Cadets in the Country, in the last two weeks of July.

On arrival in Berlin, they were greeted by the German hosts and then to the Julius-Leber Barracks; There they met and mingled with the other 21 Cadets from Korea; Austria; Sweden; Holland; USA and Canada.
On the first evening all the cadets went to a local fair ground where they met each other in a social environment and got to know a little more about each others cultures.

The first day started at 0500 where the cadets were evaluated on their fitness.  This was tested by a memorable German Army Warm up and a 5km run, followed by a brief on the sports and exercise they would have to complete in order to gain the German Army Sports Certificate and badges associated with the award.  Each Cadet had to complete a selection of events including track and field events; swimming; mountain hikes; timed 30km bike ride and 20km march. They then went on a sight seeing tour of Berlin.
This included seeing the ‘Walk of Ideas’ monument built in memory of the book burning in the 2nd World War.
The sight seeing tour was an interesting and unforgettable experience.  This was an eye opener for the cadets to see the Germans perspective of the 2nd World War and how they were affected. Every day was a full schedule of activities, and there was time to have three mountain tours one of which was up the Schloss Neuschwanstein Linderhof in Fussen.  This ended with an English guided tour of the Famous Disney trade mark castle which one sees at the beginning of any Disney film;  a visit to the STASI prison; and The Biathlon Stadium in Arbersee.
Also they had a walk through the canyons and waterfalls in Breitachklamm.  This was an amazing tour with breath taking views.  They also climbed Mount Nebelhorn which is a beautiful mountain with breathtaking views and surroundings.  On the last day of the two weeks they arrived back in Munich in order for the farewell dinner at the Marine Diving School.  During the visit Cadet CSM C Butcher became the “Best Cadet of the Group” and “Best Shot”

They all certainly achieve everything that was put in front of them and the visit was a complete success. The cadets formed special friendships with the other countries due to the team work and fond memories they shared during the two weeks, and was a Trip to remember.
On the return to Cornwall they then joined their fellow cadets and are presently on the Two week Cadet Camp in Gosport Hampshire.

ACE ( Army Cadet Exchange ) Sweden

Two Army Cadets from the St Austell Platoon Cadet Company Serjeant T Kent and Cadet Serjeant Patrick with Adult Instructor Serjeant R Coe from the St Blazey Platoon to attended an international exchange of Army Cadets in Sweden representing Country, in the last two weeks of July.

The programme was exhausting ‘living out of a suitcase’ and included some adventure training as well as plenty of opportunities to experience some typical Swedish customs.  There were Fifteen Army Cadets from Austria; Holland; Canada; America; Germany; South Korea and Sweden.  The hosts in Sweden were excellent and made them feel very welcome.
The balance between Civilian touring and military training was very well organised and it was interesting to see the uniform that cadet’s wear from the different nations.
here were many visits to museums, with the Vasa Museum absolutely amazing. They toured the old town of Stockholm and watch the changing of the guard at the Royal Castle; one of Sweden’s largest copper mines; a horse factory, involving the craftsmanship in the making of the popular wooden horses; and a visit to the border of the Arctic Circle.
On the adventure training side there was abseiling, mountain biking and white water rafting; camping under the skies and making of camp fires producing food and drink such as pine and raspberry tea!   However the Breakfast’s were bit of a culture shock as they had Bread, cheese and meat every day.
They spent four nights of the visit with the Norbottens Regiment in the far north of Sweden, where they experienced their only taste of a rainstorm whilst on an assault course. Whilst there they experienced one of the eeriest and memorable aspects of the Sweden trip in watching the midnight sun, the sunrise following the sunset within a space of one hour without the sky going dark!

Overall the Swedish Exchange was indeed a trip in a lifetime and will never be forgotten the cadets, on departure all were given Certificates of Achievements.
The cadets from Cornwall were a credit to all of the Army Cadets in the Country, and good relationships were formed between all of the different countries Army Cadets.
