SUMMER CAMP 2006

Browndown Army Camp Gosport was this year’s location for the Annual Camp when over 180 Cadets from Cornwall spent two weeks fulfilling a wide and varying programme of activities.This included an adventure training programme, and with courses on Kayaks and Sailing at the Royal Artillery Regiment Yacht Club on Thorney Island.

All Cadets undertook a two or three night exercise where they faced problems and challenges. Many cadets travelled to the Isle of Wight for a three day Expedition, under the command of Second Lieutenant S Thornton, which included walking the ‘Tennyson Way’ starting at ‘The Needles’ and finishing at ‘Jersey Camp’ on the Island.
The Senior Cadets visited the Cadet and Adult Instructors Training Centre at Frimley and were given a guided tour of the property which dates back to the Sixteenth Century, following which, they travelled to ‘Sandhurst’ and were given a special tour of the Academy with a photo opportunity on the famous Steps of the College.

Twenty five passed the British Canoe Union One Star Award.  Forty Seven Cadets passed the Junior Life Saver First Aid Course. They will use all of these achievements towards the various stages of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award; also Thirty-nine Cadets completed the Bronze Award and Fifteen the Silver Award, and One Gold Award.
Other achievements included forty six passing the Cadet Beginners Signals Course; and all the cadets attending completed elements of the Two and Three Star Levels of the Army Cadet Proficiency Certificate.

THE DUKE OF WESTMINSTER AWARD

Army Cadet H Douglas, from Hayle was presented with a cheque for £250, a Certificate of achievement and a glass plaque in coming Second in a National Competition, this was presented to her at Browndown Army Camp Gosport, by Mr B Blythe from the Learning and Skills Council in the South East Region which is responsible for all the education, funding and guidance. The citation was read out by Colonel E Woods the BTEC Director Cadet Qualifications Officer. The citation read as follows;

‘The Duke of Westminster Award was created to recognise those cadets, participating in the CVQO BTEC programme, who have consistently demonstrated a high level of commitment in a number of areas including their contribution to society, communication skills, contribution to cadets and academic achievement.
From over 80 nominations, six finalists were short-listed and interviewed by members of CVQO’s Senior Management Team.  Each and every one of the finalists is a credit to their family and their unit.  It was a near impossible task to select a winner, but it was achieved and at the end of June we presented two of the awards at a ceremony in London which cadet Douglas unfortunately missed as she was partaking in her Gold Duke of Edinburgh expedition.
All our finalists present a very impressive picture of what young people in society can achieve today.  All of them not only participated in Cadets but also actively helped in other areas of youth work.  This participation normally started through cadets.  They also showed commitment to everything that they did.
The finalists are the cream of many cadets who act as real role models in our communities.  They are young people who we can all be extremely proud to have in our society and who will definitely contribute to a brighter future for us all.
I would like to say a few words on Cadet Douglas. Cadet Douglas has shown real commitment to cadets both at detachment level and at County where she assists with the Junior Cadet Instructors Course.  She has represented the region at Cross Country and Soccer and achieved National Colours for athletics.  She also plays hockey for her school.  In her spare time she is a teaching assistant at a local school, works with Cancer Research and is a Life Guard using her first aid from cadets and helps out at a pet refuge centre.  On top of this she has just done three A Levels and her real passion is music where she is the Lead Cellist for the Cornwall Youth Orchestra.’
